News: Willow Smith To Play Annie In Remake..But That's Not It...
Rap fans should've seen this partnership coming.Will Smith recently announced that his and wife Jada's Overbrook Entertainment company are teaming with New York rapper-mogul Jay-Z to remake the 1982 film "Annie." The production will star the Smith’s daughter, and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation artist, Willow Smith. Just last week, MTV News got word that Will Smith had his eye on the film.
Do you fancy yourself familiar with Hov’s discography? Of course you are! Then you’d know why this is a perfect collaboration and why we should have seen this collaboration on the horizon. On Jay-Z’s third studio album, Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life, he crafted the catchy track, "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," which samples "It’s the Hard Knock Life" from Annie, the Broadway musical.
With this upcoming production under her belt, along with her "Whip My Hair" single, it seems Willow Smith is unstoppable. She's even nominated for an NAACP award, alongside her older brother Jaden. "The Karate Kid" star is up for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture while Willow is competing for Best New Artist and Outstanding Music Video for "Whip My Hair."
Willow Smith, who's just 10 years-old, will play Annie, a character who's an orphan seeking her parents. The film, originally based on 1977 Broadway musical, will be developed with Sony Pictures and produced by Overbrook Entertainment and Jay-Z. MTV News caught up with the wee star last year, where she explained the meaning behind her hit single.
" 'Whip My Hair' means don't be afraid to be yourself," Smith explained, "and don't let anybody tell you that that's wrong. Because the best thing is you."

Wiz announces his album title & Release Date via UStream last night. Here is his reasoning for the “Rolling Papers” title, Which hits stores March 29th.“It’s an appropriate title. It’s called Rolling Papers, like the papers that you roll, the papers that I roll, the papers that we smoke. But it’s deeper than that too. I thought of this before I even started recording the album and before it was a full idea. It’s not just about the weed thing. It’s bigger than that. My career really took off when I started smoking papers.
“The second reason I called it Rolling Papers is when I left Warner Bros. [Records], I sort of got my ‘rolling papers.’ I got my contract, fu**ing rolled up and smoked. And I was able to walk and I was able to leave and I was able to do my thing and I was able to capitalize off that. So that’s another pair of papers that I really needed in my life.
“The third reason why I named it Rolling Papers, I quit writing a long time ago. I stopped physically writing it down or putting it in my BlackBerry or iPhone. I write notes down, but I don’t write whole verses, so it was like saying goodbye to the paper. The paper’s rolling out too. So everything is real natural. The first thing that came to my head is how I really, really feel. I feel like this is my most natural sound. I paid the most attention to this shit when I did it. I was real focused. I was real keyed in on this shit when I was working on it and I didn’t use any paper, except for [the rolling papers].”
